Substance Use Disorder (SUD)
Alcohol abuse, chemical dependency, drug addiction,... all fall under Substance Use Disorder (SUD). The substance abused can be an illicit drug, a prescription medications, or a chemical bought at a hardware store. While some addictive and abused substances are regulated, they can be easily and legally obtained, like alcohol, nicotine, or spray paint. When someone compulsively uses a substance, they change the function and structure of their brain making it difficult for the addict to stop despite the consequences to themselves or the people around them.
