Physical Addiction
An addict can become physically dependent on a substance: chemical, drug, or medication; thus, the term "chemically dependent". As the drug wears off, they experience physical withdrawal symptoms. In some cases and in particular with some substances, withdrawal side effects can be life threatening. Medical attention in a hospital or detox center helps addicts more safely withdrawal from the physically addictive substance.
