Neurotransmitters and Addiction

Neurotransmitters are bio-chemicals that are naturally produced in the brain acting as chemical messengers. Imbalances in these neurotransmitters can be caused by addiction, exacerbates addiction, and perpetuate addiction.

Some drugs have a chemical structure similar to some neurotransmitters that the brain cannot tell them apart. When a drug, like Marijuana or heroin, enters the nervous system, it can mimic neurotransmitters and send atypical messages.

Some drugs cause an excessive amounts of neurotransmitters. This is accomplished by overstimulating the nerve to produce large amounts or by preventing the body from reabsorbing neurotransmitters causing a back log. In either case, the excess amounts of biochemical amplify neurological messages causing abnormal patterns.
