Depression and Addiction

Clinical Depression is more than a passing sadness or melancholy. Its a deep sense of hopelessness, lifeless, emptiness, or apathy that if left untreated can linger for weeks, months or years. Depression can lead to suicide.

Depression often co-occurs with addiction. The side effects and withdrawal effects of some drugs can cause depression by lowering serotonin, a neurotransmitter in the Central Nervous System. Feeling depressed, the addict self-medicates with a stimulant drug to elevate their mood. Shortly, the drug wears off creating a downward spiral of depression and addiction.
