Addiction
Addiction is a chronic disease of the brain that causes compulsive behaviors and thoughts. Like other mental illness, addiction is often misunderstood. Awareness and education is one of the strongest tool towards preventing and managing addiction.
Addicts compulsively use a chemical substance, like alcohol, cocaine, or pain killers, and/or compulsively use mood altering behaviors, like sex, theft, binge eating, shopping or self mutilation. In either case, "using" changes the structure and function of an addict's brain. As a result, addicts find it very difficult to stop their addictive behavior despite the consequences to themselves or those around them. Their ability to make sound decisions and resist impulses is greatly diminished.
Their is not quick fix or cure or addiction, but overtime and through a combination of therapies, addicts can learn to manage their disease. If you or a loved one is an addict, seek help today!
